I have been a midwife for over 20 years and the joy of working with families and
helping to bring a new life into the world has never left me. The diversity of couples,
each with their own anxieties and thoughts about childbirth and parenting, each bringing
with them life experiences unique to them, is part of what I love about teaching
a childbirth preparation and relaxation programme.
With four children of my own, I am convinced that HypnoBirthing®, the Mongan Method,
is a worthwhile, complete programme for deep relaxation in labour and childbirth.
Teaching HypnoBirthing®, the Mongan Method, has been a life-changing experience.
I feel passionately about its benefits for parents-to-be and warmly recommend it
as a technique.
Although I have been a practising midwife for over 20 years, I started out in the
arts world, studying dance and being involved with musical theatre, before going
on to study at Edinburgh University, graduating with an arts degree in 1976. However,
I had a strong calling into nursing and went on to complete my nursing training at
the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
Some years (and two children) later, I had the opportunity to train as a midwife
and realise a dream.
Living in rural Perthshire, I worked in the community in both a nursing and midwifery
capacity for almost 10 years. An opportunity arose to set up and lead a team of integrated
midwives in the wider rural area where I lived and worked.. In the next 10 or so
years my experience grew in all areas of midwifery care including teaching for birth
preparation and in supporting women requesting a home birth.
It became apparent to me that, for many women, preparation for childbirth reduced
anxiety levels and helped make the whole experience much more manageable than they
had imagined, and could even make it enjoyable! What I sought was a technique which
would give women the ability to experience a natural and comfortable labour and childbirth.
I know that in HypnoBirthing®, the Mongan Method, I have at last found such a technique.
